The importance of meta keyword tags fluctuates from month to month among different search engines. There is a debate in the Search Engine Optimization community as to whether or not they help at all on certain search engines. In fact, in the summer of 2004 it appeared as if they were losing importance altogether.

A meta keyword tag lists all the keywords for which you would like search engines to rank your site. Although not all search engines support this tag, you should use it for the ones that do.

This is what the meta keyword tag is all about! You don’t have to come up with any sentences, just list your keywords in order of importance. Include all your most important keywords. It’s recommended that you repeat the same keyword 3-7 times, but not in a row. Donot try to look like spam to a search engine. SEO101 recommands you to avoid repeating keywords more than 3-7 times, you can get penalized for that. Up to 3 repetitions are recommended but just don’t place them one after the other.

However, since you’ll NEVER be penalized on any search engines for using a small number of relevant targeted keywords in moderation, they can only help you. Avoid very general terms like “welcome”, “homepage” and also avoid “keyword stuffing” your meta keyword tags with too many keywords. Search
engines consider as spamming and your website can get ban on search engines. Just use relevant tags that apply directly to the content of that particular page, and limit yourself to eight or so phrases per page.
